South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly planning to shut down its final liquid-crystal display (LCD) production lines. As per a GizmoChina report, the decision to wind down the LCD business by Samsung Display will be completed by June 2022 as the company faces stiff competition from its Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts.
The company has decided to focus on manufacturing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and quantum dot (QD) displays, as OLED panels begin to become the norm in the smartphone market. That being said, as per the report, the main reason for discontinuing the production of LCD panels is low profits in the enterprise. A recent Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) revealed that LCDs cost 36.6 percent over the component’s peak production period in January 2014.
The report said that no investment plan details have been announced since then, and that employees of the LCD business are expected to be transferred to the QD business.
samsung Display had decided to shut down its LCD business in late 2020, but the plans were delayed at the request of Samsung Electronics due to a sudden increase in LCD panel prices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
