Samsung, Qualcomm and Google are working on something big

The company is building its own XR headset that is likely to use Android as the software and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip to power the device.

Samsung is a giant in the smartphone segment and has recently been trying to turn its fortunes around with laptops. Now, the South Korean brand has confirmed its plans to have a Mixed Reality (XR) headset in the near future, for which it is seeking expertise from Qualcomm and Android.

Samsung launched the new Galaxy S23 phone and Galaxy Book3 Pro laptop, but during the event the company shared updates on the development of this product with top executives from Qualcomm and Android. We still don’t know its product name, but we can guess that Samsung will power this headset on Android and use Qualcomm’s XR hardware to power the device.

Google is working on a new version of Android that is compatible with such devices, and we believe Samsung could be one of the partners to use this platform for its upcoming product. Mixed reality is being dubbed as the next big focus for the tech industry, and Apple is rumored to be working in this space, with a product expected later this year according to the report.

Mixed reality is a mix of virtual and augmented reality but you’ll still need a headset to get the best results. Having said that, making it AR-ready means that you can get them working through a smartphone as well.

Samsung will be hoping that partnerships with companies like Qualcomm and Android provide a successful model that helps them create a product that not only makes its way to market but also becomes a viable option for buyers .

Many brands have tried to accelerate their product development and have failed to make a mark. Samsung would like to avoid those possibilities and only come out with a product when it is ready – on both the hardware and software side. Either way, we look forward to seeing what comes out of this partnership and whether the new Android version makes a better case than what tablets and wearable devices have seen over the past few years.
