Samsung Galaxy S22 review: The Android flagship that matters most

Samsung’s 2022 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is the most talked about Android smartphone launch of the year. The vanilla Samsung Galaxy S22 is said to be the most true Android competitor to the vanilla iPhone 13, but is it as good? We’ll let you know. The smartphone is priced at Rs 72,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant in India. Now, I have been using this year’s most wanted Android phone for the past few days and in this article, I will tell you what I like about Samsung Galaxy S22, what I don’t like about it, and If you must, spend your Rs 72,999 on the Samsung Galaxy S22.

Design

While vanilla in pictures and promos Samsung Galaxy S22 Looks pretty basic, it’s not. While yes, the design is basic, the smartphone feels very premium from the moment you lay your hands on it. With a 6.1-inch screen, it’s a great size—not big at all, but not small either. It is the perfect size and can be used very comfortably with one hand. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is super lightweight too. I like the bezel-less screen implementation without the chin – looks great iPhone-like. The smartphone feels amazing in your hands and shows off the build quality. I would prefer it in green, but white looks pretty amazing too. The flat front and back panels of the smartphone also make it feel better and in-hand, much like the iPhone 13.

On the front, it has a hole-punch display design that samsung Calls Infinity-O Display. The back panel is plain, with the triple camera module located at the top left corner of the back panel. The Samsung Galaxy S22 has a chrome frame. The volume rocker and power button are both placed on the right, and the USB Type-C port, SIM tray and speaker grille are placed on the bottom.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is basic and beautiful. The smartphone is the perfect size with its 6.1-inch display and is very light. Most of the Android flagships these days are big and bulky smartphones and in such a market, Samsung Galaxy S22 comes out as the only easy and compact Android flagship. The build quality is also good, and the smartphone feels very premium to hold and use. The flat display is something I personally like, so that’s cool too, and of course the beautiful display makes the smartphone look pretty amazing when you’re using it.

Display

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S22 is great. It feels super bright and super accurate, and of course the 120Hz refresh rate makes the experience slick and accurate. There is a 6.1-inch full-HD + Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. Being an AMOLED panel, it showed deep blacks and bright colours. Users can customize their display with two presets – Natural and Vivid, and further with warm/cool temperature and RGB adjustments. The display looked great even in bright sunlight and it never felt sluggish under any kind of conditions.

The display also supports HDR10 and HDR10+ playback which works across all apps and games. Be it watching videos or playing games, it was a pleasant experience despite the Samsung Galaxy S22’s small size. The 120Hz refresh rate makes the experience super sleek when you do normal social media scrolling. Samsung is known for offering some of the best displays on a smartphone and with the Galaxy S22, it has bucked that trend.

performance and battery

Samsung Galaxy S22 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in India coupled with 8GB RAM. Of course, for the Samsung Galaxy S22 flagship, speed or agility isn’t an issue. I compared it with the iQoo 9 Pro Legend, which comes with 12GB of RAM paired with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, and the Asus ROG Phone 5s which comes with the Snapdragon 888+, which delivers much higher speeds. Runs (both the fastest Android phones on my person), and the Galaxy S22 was as fast as either of these high-performance gaming phones. At times, it made certain apps load faster than both the iQoo 9 Pro Legend and the Asus ROG Phone 5s. App loading time is minimal, and there are no app crashes or mistouches.

While it is super fast, the Samsung Galaxy S22 heats up quite quickly and quite a bit. While gaming or multitasking, or doing things like making backups or downloading heavy files, or even charging, the Samsung Galaxy S22 does get hot, and it gets quite hot if you’re using it without a cover. goes. While the bottom half of the phone is still fine, the top half gets hotter.

Coming to the battery, the Samsung Galaxy S22 packs a tiny 3,700mAh battery that runs a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset along with a powerful GPU. The battery isn’t the best part about the phone. On normal use, you can easily squeeze out an entire day’s use, but if you play games on a smartphone, it will wear off very quickly. The battery drains faster than usual even when multitasking, but it’s still average over a full day’s usage. The Samsung Galaxy S22 gave me less than 13 hours of usage time on a single charge. Charging at 25W feels a bit sluggish now when the competition is bringing 120W fast charging at a lower price point. It takes over 1.5 hours for the Galaxy S22 to charge to 100 percent.

camera

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S22 is one of the best on any Android smartphone. There’s a 50-megapixel primary shooter with PDAF and optical image stabilization, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with support for 3X optical zoom. Despite not being a flagship-flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S22’s camera is nothing short of flagship quality. The pictures are very clear. The colors are extremely accurate and the detailing on the images is superb.

The AI is very low on processing, and the images that do come out are very editable and not overexposed at all. For some, images may seem dull and less vibrant. This is because there is very little processing and AI doesn’t add colors to make it more vibrant. Even the details and color accuracy in the images are better than most of the Android cameras out there. For images in well-lit environments, the Samsung Galaxy S22’s camera is as good as the iPhone for still images. The Samsung Galaxy S22 has 3X optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom and images are crisp and clear with 3X zoom, while 30x zoom is also quite cool and shows things that are far away from you.

In low-light night images, the AI image processing is a bit clear, but images are brilliant. (Image credit: News18 / Darab Mansoor Ali)

In low light, however, the processing is visible. While the images are again very detailed, night shots feel more processed and not as life-like as well-lit photos. Of course, images also look great in low-light night environments and are on par with some of the best phone cameras, if not better. Portrait mode on the Samsung Galaxy S22 also works great and the AI cuts the edges quite well. For people it works quite well, whereas on objects, the AI processing is a bit obvious (not that it works poorly).

Samsung Galaxy S22 is one of the most practical and premium Android flagships out there. It is one of the very few small Android flagships and beats the competition on almost all aspects. (Image credit: News18 / Darab Mansoor Ali)

Decision

Samsung Galaxy S22 is one of the most desirable Android smartphones in the market currently. It looks and feels very premium when you hold it with the flat design and chrome rails, and it feels very light to hold in your hands. It’s the perfect size and doesn’t feel bulky like other Android flagships, with its beautiful and sleek 6.-1-inch display, and it’s super fast in all aspects of performance. The battery backup is less than I expected, and the smartphone heats up very often. Even 25W charging seems sluggish now as we are in 2022. However, if you are in the market for the best and most practical Android phone that you can buy for daily use, the Samsung Galaxy S22 ticks all the boxes. It is the most direct competitor to the iPhone 13 in the Android flagship space.
