Samantha Ruth Prabhu-starrer Shakuntalam has failed to impress the audience. The Gunasekhar directorial crashed at the box office in five days. It has managed to earn Rs 50 lakh on its 5th day. According to box office tracker Sacnilk.com, the mythological drama earned only Rs 2.7 crore on the first day.

It saw a decline on the second day and earned Rs 1.55 crore. The total six days collection now stands at Rs 6.62 crore only. On the sixth and seventh day, the film earned only 30 lakhs per day.

The story of the film is based on Menaka, the daughter of sage Vishwamitra and Apsara, who falls in love with King Dushyanta of the Puru dynasty. They welcome a child but in a twist of fate, Dushyant forgets all about their love due to a sage’s curse. Beating all the power plays of fate, the film narrates the journey of their reunion.

According to News18 Shosha’s Shakuntalam review, it is a story of a woman and her struggles. “Unfortunately, the film feels like it is aimed at kids and children only. Gunasekhar, experienced in mythological subjects and having won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film in 1997 for Ramayanam, knows the subject and charms Shakuntala as well, but seems unable to do justice to the subject. Torn between doing justice to the subject as well. It is not content-heavy for kids,” read the review.

Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 63 crore, Gunasekhar’s film failed at the box office. Apart from Samantha, the film also starred Dev Mohan in the lead role. Shakuntalam is an adaptation of Kalidasa’s epic drama Abhijnana Shakuntalam.

While Samantha plays the titular role, the film stars a star cast including Mohan Baby, Jisshu Sengupta and Madhu in pivotal roles. Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha is also making her acting debut with this film.
