Salernitana safe in Serie A after trustees accept bid to buy club from new owner

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Saturday that Salernitana have been kept out of Serie A after their trustees accepted a bid to buy the club from a new owner. The acceptance of the bid came just before the Friday midnight deadline, which forced the club based in Salerno, south of Naples, out of the league, with no offer accepted. FIGC confirmed to AFP on Saturday that “in accordance with the terms of the deed of trust, as of midnight yesterday, the trustees have informed FIGC via e-mail that they have accepted an irrevocable offer to purchase the shares of Salernitana.” “.

The federation confirmed media reports the new owner was Daniele Irvolino, 43, the founder of Italy’s Pegasus Online University.

In a statement published in the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Irvolino said he would “do everything to keep Salernitana in Serie A.”

“I announce with great enthusiasm the acquisition of Salernitana 1919. Salerno and his fans deserve a competitive team,” said Irvolino.

“I strongly believe that the project of relaunching the team we are building will guarantee balance and stability to the club.”

The acceptance of the offer triggers a 45-day extension in the time available to secure a deal, ensuring that Salernitana will continue to play until mid-February.

The club was promoted to the top flight of Italy this season, but immediately violated FIGC rules as the club was co-owned by Lazio boss Claudio Lotto.

According to FIGC rules, no two clubs with the same ownership can play in the same division.

Trustees were appointed in June to organize the sale of the club until 31 December, but last month requested a new deadline, saying they had not received good bids.

Italian football chief Gabriele Gravina said that hope was dashed after there was no extension.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the necessary formalities for the deal have not yet been completed.
