SAI, IOA launch sensitization program for Tokyo Olympic bound athletes

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday launched a series of sensitization programs for the Indian contingent traveling to Tokyo.

The interactive program is designed to help athletes and support staff understand COVID-19 protocols, Japanese culture and anti-doping regulations.

According to Prem Verma, Deputy Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent, several issues raised by the IOA, including the quarantine period for Indian athletes, have been addressed by the Tokyo Olympic Games Organizing Committee (TOCOG) to India’s satisfaction. .

“There will be no restriction on training of Indians. But they cannot meet athletes from other countries for the first three days upon arrival at the Tokyo Olympic Games village,” Verma said.

Verma said Indian athletes preparing for the Olympics abroad and arriving directly to Tokyo will not face the restrictions applicable to those staying in India for 14 days before departure.

“TOCOG has extended the list of accredited laboratories for COVID-19 related tests in several cities across the country,” Verma said.

Over the next few days, all athletes and coaches will go through three modules, titled Life in Tokyo, Playing Clean and From India with Pride.

Life in Tokyo explains preparation for the trip in the fortnight before departure, formalities to be completed before the trip, including vaccinations, COVID-19 positive/negative reports, and anti-body test reports and upon arrival.

Athletes and support staff from hockey, judo, rowing, boxing and wrestling took part in the inaugural session of Life in Tokyo on Friday.

World badminton champion PV Sindhu, table tennis player Sharath Kamal and fencer Bhavani Devi were among those who participated in the first playing clean module of an anti-doping session organized by National Anti-Doping Agency officials on Thursday.

SAI Director General Sandeep Pradhan said that it is important to understand the protocol laid down by the organizing committee.

“The Olympic Games are being organized under various circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the duty and responsibility of every team member to feel comfortable and safe in the environment.”
