‘Safety of players is paramount’: BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal opens up on India’s tour of South Africa

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is currently battling a difficult situation in the country following the classification of a new COVID-19 variant. As the World Health Organization sounded the alarm over the issue on Friday, sporting events across the country are headed for cancellation.

South Africa’s tour of Netherlands was postponed on Saturday and now the question has been raised on Team India’s upcoming tour.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) Treasurer Arun Dhumal on Saturday said the board is in regular touch with the CSA regarding the upcoming bilateral series and how players’ safety should be ensured.

“There is nothing to say now. Both the boards are in constant contact. The safety and health of the players is of paramount importance to both the boards. We are monitoring the situation closely, as soon as both the teams feel that anything needs to be done, they will take a call,” Dhumal was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“Look, whatever has to be done keeping in mind the health and safety of the players, will be done. Whether crowding is allowed or not is secondary. The first priority is for sports,” he said.

India are to tour South Africa next month for 3 Tests and as many ODIs, followed by four T20Is. The yatra will start from 17th December.

Earlier, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur said that the BCCI should consult the government before sending the cricket team to South Africa where a new COVID-19 variant has emerged.

“Not only BCCI, but every board should also consult the Government of India before sending the team to the country where a new COVID-19 variant has emerged. It is not right to send the team to a country where there is danger, if BCCI consults us, we will consider it.
