Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar has given strict instructions to the DGP of the state regarding Bakrid. The speaker wrote a letter to the DGP and said to ensure that no cow is slaughtered on Bakrid. Seller and possessor of cow meat can be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and a fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees. Narvekar has recently become the speaker of the assembly in the Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis government. As Bakrid approaches, the issue of sacrificing cows has intensified. On June 7, some people had gone to the Deonar slaughterhouse in a truck carrying cows in Deonar, Mumbai. As soon as the information was received, the police showed activity and seized the truck and arrested the accused. After this, the workers of Vishwa Hindu Parishad of Konkan province have written a letter to the Speaker of the Assembly demanding that cow slaughter should be stopped.

BJP-Shiv Sena government had banned cow slaughter
Cow slaughter is a crime in Maharashtra. It was banned by the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government. However, cows can be slaughtered after getting a certificate of ‘fit to slaughter’ from the local administration.

After Nupur Sharma’s statement, there was an atmosphere of tension across the country. Two people were murdered in Udaipur and Amravati for supporting Nupur. Seeing the situation deteriorating, Lok Sabha MP and All India United Democratic Front chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has appealed to the Muslims of Assam to respect the sentiments of Hindus. He said that I request my Muslims not to sacrifice cows on this Bakrid.
