The 25-year-old singer revealed that she wrote Espresso during a trip to France, following her time as an opening act for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter celebrated a significant career milestone at the most recent 2024 MTV VMAs. She secured her first-ever Song of the Year award for her hit single Espresso. She took the stage in genuine disbelief and used the moment to express gratitude not only to her fans but also to her “cats and dogs watching at home.” Carpenter’s surprise at the win was evident as she delivered her acceptance speech. “Well, well, well. I’ve literally never won one of these,” she said, reflecting on how much the award meant to her. She started her speech by acknowledging her fans and crediting them for her success. “You guys are the reason that I get to do what I love,” she said while thanking her supporters.
She continued to heap praise on her fans, adding, “I just feel so great that I have the best fans in the world. I know that sounds cheesy, but I love you.” Along with her fans, Carpenter gave a shout-out to her managers, family and even her pets, who she joked were likely watching her from home, reports Elle.
Sabrina also took a moment to recognise the team behind Espresso. “Thank you to the people who made Espresso with me. Stef, Amy, Julian—I love you guys so much. I love making music with you, and I can’t wait to share more,” she said, showing her deep appreciation for their collaboration.
In wrapping up her speech, Carpenter reiterated how much the award meant to her, playfully ending with, “Thank you to that me Espresso.”
Earlier in the night, Sabrina had reportedly left an impression with her performance of Espresso, in which she paid homage to Britney Spears by recreating elements of Spears’ iconic Oops!… I Did It Again music video.
Coming into the night with seven nominations, Carpenter was a strong contender in several major categories, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for Espresso, Song of the Summer for Please Please Please and Best Pop Artist. She also had nominations for Best Direction and Best Art Direction for her Please Please Please video and Espresso received a nod for Best Editing.
During a conversation with W Magazine, the 25-year-old singer revealed that she wrote Espresso during a trip to France, following her time as an opening act for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Carpenter recalled. “I had my shot of espresso, and then I might have had some champagne, and before I knew it the song was written. I definitely hear it now in every car I get into, and being on the radio, to me, is still—it’s like fate. You have to be at the right place at the right time.”
