Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his shock at the controversial dismissal of his Maharashtra teammate Ankit Bawne, calling it “absolutely pathetic”.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has blasted an umpiring decision during the ongoing Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Services in Pune. Gaikwad was unhappy with a controversial call taken during the Day 2 of the Elite Group A match that resulted in the dismissal of Maharashtra captain Ankit Bawne,
Maharashtra were handed a few early blows while replying to Services’ first innings total of 293-all out at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Thursday. Bawne waged a lone battle with a fighting half-century even as wickets kept tumbling at the other end.
From 63/3, Maharashtra recovered to 137/3 but the dismissal of Azim Kazi (19) triggered a collapse that saw them being skittled for 185 and thus they conceded 108-run lead to Services.
Bawne top-scored with 73 off 104 but the manner of his dismissal was highly debatable. The stand-in captain edged one from left-arm spinner Amit Shukla towards the second slip with the fielder Shubham Rohilla claiming the catch before the Services fielders began celebrating.
However, replays suggested that the ball may have bounced of the turf before being caught by Rohilla. The commentator on-air also pointed out the fact. However, the match officials, after a brief discussion, adjudged it as out.
“I think it fell short at first glance. The ball has lobbed earlier and then it has gone into the hands of the second slip. They are claiming the catch and the umpire has given it out” the commentator said.
