India is somehow avoiding condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attack on Russia’s attack on Ukraine. India-Russia defense ties are the reason for this. In view of the deteriorating situation with China, India will need Russian weapons.

After the India-China skirmish in Galvan, India needs Russian diplomatic support and weapons to deal with China. India-China tension has been going on in the Galwan Valley for the last two years.

Russia supported Modi
At present, 65% of the weapons of the Indian Armed Forces come from Russia and India is dependent on Russia for its parts. At the same time, Russia had also supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision regarding the Kashmir dispute. This is the reason why Modi is not openly opposing Russia.

India’s stand at UNSC
India was also absent during the voting in the UNSC on all resolutions condemning Russia’s attack in Ukraine. Along with India, China and UAE also did not participate in the voting. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said- We at the United Nations take a cautious and such approach which is based on ideas. We will consider the motion of censure thoroughly and make a decision in our best interest.

America has no problem with India’s stand
Not taking sides on the Russia-Ukraine issue, the Modi government is confident that the US will see it differently as India has become America’s partner in countering China. India is part of the Quad (Quadrlateral Security Dialogue) along with the US, Japan and Australia. The Quad was created with the aim of countering the influence of China.

America will not put ties with India at stake
India follows its own path in international affairs despite pressure. History is witness to this. America will not put its 20 year old relationship with India at stake. Despite strong opposition from the US, India bought the S-400 Triumph missile from Russia. Even after this, America did not take any step against India. While doing so, the US refused to give F-35 fighter jets to NATO member Turkey.
