Rupee down 15 paise to all-time low of 79.60 against US dollar – Times of India

Mumbai: Rupee On Tuesday, a strong greenback closed 15 paise lower at a new lifetime low of 79.60 (provisional) against the US dollar as a strong greenback overseas and weakness in domestic equities weighed on investor sentiments. In the interbank forex market, the local unit opened weak against the greenback at 79.55 and saw intra-day highs of 79.53 and 79.66 low.
It finally closed at 79.60 (provisional), 15 paise lower than its previous close of 79.45.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.48 per cent to 108.54.
On the domestic equity market front, the Sensex ended 508.62 points or 0.94 per cent lower at 53,886.61, while the broader Nifty ended 157.70 points or 0.97 per cent lower at 16,058.30.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 2.27 per cent to $104.67 a barrel.
Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital markets on Monday as they sold shares worth Rs 170.51 crore, according to exchange data.
