Maurya, who is considered a prominent OBC leader in Uttar Pradesh, had said that some portions of the Ramcharitmanas “insult” a large section of society on the basis of caste and demanded that these be “banned”.

“Any courageous person, if he cuts off the tongue of SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya, he will be given a check of Rs 51,000. They have insulted our religious text and hurt the sentiments of Hindus,” said Saurabh Sharma, district in-charge of the Mahasabha.

Members of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) took out a symbolic procession of Maurya, burnt his effigy and threw it into the Yamuna river.

ABHM national spokesperson Sanjay Jat told PTI, “We object to the derogatory remarks made by SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya.” And when he joined BJP he started respecting Ramcharitmanas and now when he has joined Samajwadi Party, he has made objectionable remarks against Ramcharitmanas.

“We protested his remarks and took out a mock funeral procession of the SP leader and later burnt his effigy and threw it into the Yamuna at Rambagh,” Jat said.

Maurya, a member of the Legislative Council in Uttar Pradesh, said that “there are some lines (in the Ramcharitmanas) which mention the names of castes like ‘Teli’ and ‘Kumhar'” and that these caused “the feelings of millions coming from these castes”. People got hurt”.
