RRR Fever At Golden Globes; Will NTR Jr-Ram Charan Film Start Awards Season With Wins?

The SS Rajamouli magnum opus starring RRR, NTR Jr and Ram Charan has taken Los Angeles by storm. Even Hollywood bigwigs are all praise for the film, which has been shortlisted for Oscars 2023 by the Academy. While the former will be the big prize for Indian cinema, it is the Globes where the awards season action begins on Wednesday. Rajamouli, NTR Jr and Ram Charan will be present at the grand ceremony on January 11, where the film has been nominated in two categories – Best Picture – Non English and Best Original Song – Motion Picture.

But how did all this happen? Let’s go back to last March when the movie hit the theatres. After much delay, Rajamouli finally released the film in theaters last March, taking the audience back to the 1920s.

The plot explores an unspecified period in the lives of Bhima (Jr. NTR) and Raju (Ram Charan) when both the revolutionaries chose to fade into oblivion before starting to fight for their country.

After meeting the expectations he had raised with Baahubali and Baahubali 2 since the announcement of RRR, Rajamouli not only lived up to it but exceeded it with RRR. It was no surprise that the film eventually emerged as a blockbuster, with every state dancing to Naatu Naatu. Like most films, the craze for RRR seemed to subside a few months after its release.

But the biggest shock was yet to come. It was when the film hit the digital streaming platforms that RRR did a bigger bang than expected. Viewers in the West started watching and the fire started India It spread like wildfire in the West.

Earlier, Hollywood director Daniel Kwan praised RRR and tweeted, “After a busy year of work and travel I finally checked a few things off my to do list 1) Finished my taxes (I know the irony) And 2) watched RRR. Holy cow you weren’t kidding. Whenever I watch an Indian action film I feel like I’m working in the wrong country.”

John Krasinski, known for his work in The Office and Jack Ryan, also praised the film and said, “Is this RRR? Oh my god, I heard it’s incredible. I wanted to see (it, but) , I didn’t see anything. I was just directing a film, but I can’t wait to see it.” Earlier, The Vampire Diaries fame Joseph Morgan also called RRR an ‘absolute masterpiece’ and tweeted, “Had a little time off shoot and Persia White and I watched two incredible movies. ‘RRR’ and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ both were amazing. We laughed and cried and gasped in amazement. Just great cinema.

The international recognition prompted Rajamouli and team to start their campaign for RRR at the Oscars. While fans were hopeful that RRR would be India’s official submission to the Oscars, they were left heartbroken by this turn of events. However, the makers were not going to give up. Instead, he opted to approach the Academy directly and submitted the film ‘For Your Consideration’ in October.

As the Oscar rally begins, RRR has started garnering other international nominations including the prestigious Golden Globe Awards 2023. When the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards were announced, RRR jumped with joy.

SS Rajamouli tweeted, “Thanks to the jury at @goldenglobes for nominating #RRRMovie in two categories. Congratulations to the entire team. Thank you to all the fans and viewers for your unconditional love and support.”

Jr NTR tweeted, “Happy that #RRRMovie has been nominated in two categories at the Golden Globe Awards! Congratulations to all of us. Looking forward (sic).

The Golden Globe nomination only strengthens RRR’s case at the Oscars. Adding a cherry to the cake caused a reaction from fans in Japan, the US and other countries where the film hit theatres. The final dusting of sugar on the cake came in the form of producer Jason Blum, the founder of Hollywood studio Blumhouse, which produced the Oscar-nominated film “Get Out” and horror films such as “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious.” Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR will be honored with the Best Film honor at this year’s Oscars. “I win best picture with RRR. You heard that here for the first time. Please mark it,” he tweeted. “If I’m right, I’m giving myself my own Oscar award,” he said.

Last March, sitting in a packed theater watching RRR, I joined the loud cheering crowd along with Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s natu natu. The energy was infectious and the experience was nothing less than a celebration. However, if anyone had told me that crowds from all over the world would not only be dancing along to the song but also rallying to win some of the biggest prizes, I would have scowled in disbelief. And yet, here we are keeping fingers crossed for RRR to win the Golden Globes on January 11.
