LONDON: Senior New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor feels the World Test Championship win “probably” made up for the heartbreak of the ODI World Cup final two years ago. England won the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand over a controversial boundary count rule. The 100 overs followed by a super over produced a thrilling tie.

“I think at the beginning of my career, there were some ups and downs. We played in some inconsistent sides, but, no, I think over the years, the team has built up a pretty consistent side and went on to win the 2019 World Cup. After the heartbreak, it’s definitely the highlight and I think that probably makes up for that,” Taylor said in a virtual media interaction on Wednesday.

It was a fitting end to the WTC final as Taylor and captain Kane Williamson remained unbeaten to ensure an eight-wicket win over India for their maiden world title. Taylor scored the winning run and then came a moment he would never forget.

“Once the winning run is hit, the walk with him (Wilmson) and the discussion that follows, it’s something I’ll never forget.” It was touch and go even when I went there to bat; And Kane has been a wonderful captain and ambassador for the sport and our country to get through that difficult period.

“And for him there and on that last ball first, he stared at me: ‘Hurry up and finish it’ so he doesn’t have to. So hitting boundaries and a tough match with a lot of hard work over the last two or so years It was nice to celebrate.”
