Roopa Gurunath resigns as TNCA president, citing “personal commitments” for decision

Former BCCI president N Srinivasan’s daughter Roopa Gurunath on Thursday resigned as the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) president to focus on “professional and personal commitments”.

Roopa took over as TNCA President in September 2019, becoming the first woman to head a state cricket association in India.

“Roopa Gurunath has announced her resignation from the post of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president and will spend more time focusing on business and personal commitments. Roopa Gurunath is a Whole Time Director at India Cements Limited and has been instrumental in bringing India Cements back to its leadership position.”

Interestingly, a report by former BCCI Ethics Officer cum Ombudsman Justice (Retd) DK Jain in June this year found her to be potentially guilty of a ‘conflict of interest’ as she was an integral part of India Cements, the popular IPL team. Chennai is the owner of Super Kings.

While TNCA officials vehemently denied a ‘conflict of interest’ as the reason for his resignation, another theory that has been floating around in cricket circles is that the son of the state’s most powerful political family to head the state cricket body. Very curious.

Roopa, on his part, thanked the Apex Council, office bearers and members of TNCA for their continued support during his tenure and said, “It is my pleasure and a true honor to serve as the President of one of the most prestigious cricket Used to be. unions in the country.

“I take this opportunity to thank all the Apex Council members, players, staff, city and district TNCA members, friends and family for their support during my tenure.”

Earlier this year, the BCCI ethics officer was found guilty of ‘conflict of interest’ for India Cements’ close association with Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd on a complaint by a former life member of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.

However, TNCA sources denied that Roopa resigned because of this, insisting that she had actually resigned to focus on her “professional and personal commitments”.

Meanwhile, it is learned that Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son Udayanidhi is eyeing the top post of TNCA.

But there has been no official or unofficial confirmation from any top government or DMK party sources.

It remains to be seen whether former BCCI strongman Srinivasan will leave the field and allow the young politician to enter the cricket association.

Also it remains to be seen how it affects the equation in the BCCI Power Corridor.
