According to Dole, the young pacer should be used when the ball is new and can be offered swing, rather than being given the responsibility of bowling in the death overs.

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull on Tuesday made an honest statement about Arjun Tendulkar’s role in the Mumbai Indians squad ahead of the franchise’s IPL clash against Gujarat Titans. During a conversation with Cricbuzz, Dole said that Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma is well aware of Arjun’s ability.

According to Dole, the young pacer should be used when the ball is new and can offer swing, rather than being given the responsibility of bowling in the death overs. Furthermore, Dole showed his faith in Arjun, saying that he should not lose his place in the team because of “one bad game” as “he did a really great job.”

“Throwing a youngster on the heap after one bad game is the last thing you should do to him, in fact, he’s done quite well. In all honesty, I think Rohit Sharma knows he’s not exactly a death bowler . They shouldn’t have bowled him the last four or five overs. He went to him, yet again, to give him a chance, and it cost him dearly,” explained Simon Doll.

In his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders, Arjun Tendulkar was very good with the new ball, conceding just 17 runs in two overs. Given his lack of experience, the left-arm fast bowler could not get a chance to bowl at the back end of the innings. In his subsequent appearance against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Arjun had to duck under the pressure of the death overs as the youngster was given the responsibility of defending 20 runs in the final over.

The decision clicked well as Tendulkar not only picked up his maiden IPL wicket but also helped Mumbai win the game by 14 runs. He also bowled some exceptional yorkers while maintaining his line very well.

Arjun could not continue the form in the next game against Punjab Kings. Bowling three overs, he conceded 48 runs including 31 runs in one over, which is the second most expensive over by a Mumbai bowler. Noting this, Simon Doull said, “He reminds me more of Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, who bowl two to three overs forward where the ball swings a bit and then you forget about it.” He just doesn’t have enough experience to bowl at the end of the innings.”

Coming into the Gujarat fixture on the back of that nightmare, Arjun put in another commendable performance with the new ball, conceding just 9 runs in two overs, while also getting the crucial wicket of Wriddhiman Saha. Arjun may enjoy good rhythm in the match, but Mumbai could not take much advantage of it. Chasing Gujarat’s target of 208, MI Paltan fell short by 55 runs, handing them their second defeat in a row.
