Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was seen giving a high five to a small fan at the airport premises. The picture is believed to have been clicked at the Chennai airport. Rohit arrived in the city to lead Mumbai in the eliminator game against Lucknow Super Giants, which is scheduled to be played on May 24 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Mumbai Indians have finally made it to the top four after a long wait of two seasons. Plagued by injury issues to several first team players, the five-time champions could not get their campaign off to a pleasant start this year as well. But they made a miraculous comeback in the second phase of the tournament thanks to a commendable performance from the batting unit.

Mumbai needed to wait till their last game to heave a sigh of relief. But their playoff hopes rested on a few other teams as well, which were also contenders for the fourth spot. Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants have already made it to the knockout stage. Apart from Mumbai, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals were in the race. Mumbai had to register a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad while Bangalore had to lose to Gujarat.

In the last match against Hyderabad at the Wankhede, Mumbai bowlers got off to a disappointing start as the opposition put up a mammoth 200 on the board. Coming out to chase, Mumbai lost the wicket of opener Ishan Kishan early. Despite the setback, Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green showed nerves of steel and stitched a match-winning 128-run partnership. While Rohit was dismissed for 56, Green remained unbeaten on 100 off 47 balls. Suryakumar Yadav burst onto the scene in the end and helped Mumbai reach the target with two overs to spare.

Despite a resounding win over Hyderabad, Mumbai had to wait for Shubman Gill’s game-changing century as Gujarat defeated Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gujarat’s win ensured Mumbai’s place in the IPL playoffs for the first time since winning the title in 2020.
