Batsman Sunil Gavaskar names ‘obvious choice’ to take over the responsibility of T20I captaincy Virat Kohli Whose tenure as India’s T20I captain ended with a 9-wicket win over Namibia on Monday. Kohli has given up his captaincy in the shortest format to handle his workload. The BCCI is yet to announce India’s next T20I captain, but Kohli and Ravi Shastri have already indicated that Rohit Sharma is in pole position to take charge.

Gavaskar also gave his opinion on the matter and said that Rohit is the best person to lead India to the ICC trophy as the next T20 World Cup will be held in Australia next year.

“If the World Cup was maybe 2-3 years away then it would have been a long term affair. But the next World Cup is less than 12 months away, so you don’t have to look there for long. Maybe for the long term you can look at 2023 but right now you have to find the best person who can take India to the ICC trophy and that is Rohit Sharma,” Gavaskar said on Sports Today.

Rohit is highly ranked by most of the cricket critics for his exemplary captaincy record in the IPL. The flamboyant India opener is the only captain in IPL history to guide his team to five IPL trophies – Mumbai Indians.

Gavaskar said that Rohit is the clear choice to lead India in T20Is at present, but claims that India may look for a new captain after the T20 World Cup in Australia.

“With his record for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he is the obvious choice, so I think he should be given the captaincy and maybe after the World Cup in Australia next year, maybe take a look at another T20I captain . But right now, it is only Rohit Sharma,” said the former India batsman.

Recently, Rohit became the third batsman to score 3000 runs in men’s T20 Internationals on Monday in the T20 World Cup match against Namibia. Hitman scored 56 runs in the last match of India’s T20 World Cup campaign to lay the foundation for a massive 9-wicket win. The flamboyant opener joins the elusive list along with Virat Kohli and Martin Guptill.
