Giorgio Chiellini’s final match for Italy against Argentina next week is his chance to thank him for his 18 years of service, coach Roberto Mancini said on Friday.

According to multiple media reports, Chiellini has announced his departure from club side Juventus and his international retirement at the end of this season, but the 37-year-old may continue to play in North America.

The ‘Finalissima’ game at Wembley will be Chiellini’s 117th international appearance for the European champions.

“He made his choice and the choices should be respected. I will talk with him to thank him, it is normal for him to take the other route,” Mancini said at a news conference at the start of Italy’s training camp.

The defender won a bronze medal with Italy at the 2004 Summer Olympics, before being called up for the senior team against Finland by Marcelo Lippi in November of that year.

Eighteen years later, he is included in a group of 45 players called by Mancini in June. Italy will face Copa America winners Argentina in London on Wednesday in a revived meeting of European and South American champions.

Italy will then play Germany twice, Hungary and England in the Nations League.

Mancini insists that Chiellini will be the only retirement from Azzurri, despite Italy missing for the second time in a row World cup.

“Some people can play their last match of the season (against Argentina) and go home because we have to make a choice, but no one is Giorgio’s age,” Mancini said.

“We have to start all over again, despite what happened supporters are still behind us.”
