Ricky Ponting turned down BCCI after being approached for India coaching role: Report

Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting was reportedly approached by the BCCI with an offer to take over the role of the head coach of the Indian cricket team. However, Ponting, who is currently associated with IPL Franchisee Delhi Capitals turned it down.

According to a report in The Times of IndiaWhile the reasons for his refusal are unknown and in all likelihood, the great Rahul Dravid will now replace Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

“Rahul was the only ideal candidate. The challenge was persuading them to do so. Truth be told, there is no other option”, TOI quoted a source as saying.

Under Ponting’s leadership, DC finished runners-up last season and made the playoffs this year as well.

While the BCCI hasn’t made anything official yet, Dravid is a unanimous choice. However, the latest reports, if true, are quite the opposite of what was being claimed earlier.

Although Dravid had been approached earlier as well, the former India captain was unwilling to take over as head coach as he wanted to continue working as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Reportedly, the BCCI told Dravid that he would not be able to stay at the NCA on his current salary and hence if he wants to continue his association with Team India, taking over as the new head coach is his only choice.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has said that he has no idea about what is happening on the coaching front. “Absolutely don’t know what is happening on that front. Asked about Dravid’s appointment, Kohli said, “I haven’t had a detailed discussion with anyone yet.

Dravid was the coach of the second-tier Indian limited-overs team for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, when several senior members of the Indian team were in England for a Test tour.
