Revitalizing Clock Towers

Hyderabad: There was a time when a clock rang and many people ran for their meetings and many people peeped through their windows to check the time.

Laxman Chugani of Ramesh Swiss Watch Company.

Those who could not see could understand from the shrimp what time it was. Such was the accuracy of the clock at the top of the tower, with clock towers being an essential part of daily life in old Hyderabad. As clocks became smaller, advanced, and even present on smartphones, there was a phase where clock towers became obsolete. But that didn’t put Laxman Chugani out of business.

He is said to be the only person in Hyderabad who can repair the famous Swiss watches, Chugani’s passion for watches and everything related to the time machine has propelled him. Last year he took the initiative to rejuvenate the famous Ghantaghar of Secunderabad and he did it successfully.

“I’m working on big clocks these days. People in the Twin Cities know I’m good at fixing big clocks, which made me accept this challenge and fix big clocks around town,” says Chugani. who now runs the Ramesh Swiss Watch Company, a venture that has helped Hyderabad keep watch on time since 1947.

One of their recent missions was to fix the clock on the tower at Hanamkonda, the locals now come to the collectorate only to see and hear the clock. The clock chime has become quite popular.

“The best part of the watch that I fix is that they do not need to be maintained. The bell chimes can be heard almost 2 km away,” says the 77-year-old, who swears by his Hyderabadi roots.

Chugani has recently installed clock towers at MJ Market, James Street, Nizamabad, Samalkota, Monda Market and Indalwai in Nizamabad.
