The Chief Minister said that the matter was being dealt with the utmost seriousness and all steps would be taken to protect the rights and dignity of the people of Sikkim.

With a Sikkim minister resigning over the Supreme Court’s observation that Sikkim’s Nepali community are immigrants, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has said that his government has already filed a review petition in the apex court for rectification.

Tamang said the state’s additional advocate general and law secretary were looking into the matter in the national capital along with legal experts.

“It is informed to all that the Government of Sikkim has filed a review petition before the Hon’ble Supreme Court India To suitably address the grievances and sentiments of the people of Sikkim with respect to certain observations in the judgment pronounced on 13th January, 2023,” he said in a social media post.

“I am going to New Delhi to personally meet Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and top law officers of the country,” Sikkim Chief Minister said on Thursday.

He said that the matter is being dealt with utmost seriousness and all steps will be taken to protect the rights and dignity of the people of Sikkim.

Sikkim’s Health Minister, Mani Kumar Sharma, resigned from his post on Thursday after the Supreme Court in its comments questioned the state government’s way of handling the issue relating to portraying the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants.

In a letter to Tamang, he said the state government has not taken the sentiments of the people of Sikkim seriously.

“I think it is not necessary to continue in the state cabinet further,” Sharma said. He urged Tamang to accept his resignation with immediate effect.

The Supreme Court’s observation that Sikkim’s Nepali community was an immigrant, while income tax exemption was allowed to all old settlers on caste lines, stirred state politics, leading to widespread discontent among all sections of civil society. Went.

The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha had taken out a peace march to protest against the apex court’s observations.
