Review: ‘Baby Girl is a singer’s sad story about Alia’

Baby Girl: Better known as Aaliyah by Kathy Indoli (Atria Books)

R&B singer Aaliyah is known for two events that booked her career: being involved as a teenager with infamous singer R. Kelly, and the tragic plane crash that took place just days before 9/11 at the age of 22. I ended my life.

Baby Girl: Known as Aaliyah, veteran music journalist Kathy Indoli aims to fill in the story between those two events for Aaliyah fans new and old. The books trace Alia’s musical evolution and collaborations with many different R&B producers and artists, her growing film career and indelible mark on fashion. But even after 20 years of her death, Alia’s personality has not been guessed yet.

With a silky smooth voice, Alia Houghton was signed to a record deal with her uncle in Detroit when she was just 12 years old. Two years later, she collaborated with R. Kelly to set her first record, As Ain’t Nothing But A Number. She got involved with R Kelly and the two got married secretly when Aaliyah was just 15 years old. Her parents discovered this and quickly annulled the marriage.

But this scandal made R. More than Kelly tarnished the reputation of Aaliyah, who is currently on trial for more than two decades of sex trafficking charges. He was portrayed as a teenage seductress rather than one of the many victims, R. Kelly’s first.

The scandal made Alia extremely private for years to come, but she continued to record hits. She teamed up with the then unknown Timbaland and Missy Elliot for her second record, One in a Million, which has sold 8 million copies worldwide.

Meanwhile, she was making a mark in the fashion and film industries. His signature style of crop top or bandu top with baggy jeans, with long hair partially covering his left eye, is the epitome of his sweet yet street style and is still imitated today. She had roles in the films Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned and was set to star in the Matrix sequel before she died.

But that was not to be. On 25 August 2001, Aaliyah died in a plane crash in the Bahamas, where she was shooting a music video for her third and final self-titled album, Aaliyah. The aircraft was found badly overloaded.

For years, Alia’s music has not been available on streaming platforms, with the exception of her debut album, As Ain’t Nothing But A Number.

But following a fan campaign on social media with the hashtag #FreeAaliyahMusic, Blackground Records said it plans to release the album to streaming services on August 20, in time for the 20th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death. This move is not without controversy. Alia’s family wealth does not support the release.

But it will give a new generation of fans an easy way to hear more about Alia’s work. And Baby Girl: Better known as Aaliyah, these platforms should serve as a useful companion for first time explorers of Aaliyah’s music through these platforms.
