Retail business grows 24% in May against pre-pandemic levels: Report – Times of India

New Delhi: Retail business across India witnessed a growth of 24 per cent in May this year as against the pre-pandemic level of the same month in 2019, according to industry body RAI. RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan said, “It is encouraging to see a steady improvement in sales with 23 per cent growth in April and 24 per cent growth in May as compared to pre-pandemic levels.”
He said categories like apparel and footwear have started performing well due to the ongoing wedding season and resumption of work from office.
Rajagopalan further said, “Inflation concerns remain, however, customers are now ready to come out and buy as socialization is now gaining momentum.”
RAI said sales across categories are showing steady growth. With an uptick in outdoor activities, categories such as quick-service restaurants (41 percent) and footwear (30 percent) are showing signs of rapid growth, and sectors like beauty and wellness (9 percent) have also started showing positive growth. According to the RAI survey, sales of consumer goods and electronics in May grew by 15 per cent over the same month in 2019, while apparel and clothing also saw a growth of 24 per cent.
