Restriction on foreign funding: License of more than 12 thousand NGOs including Jamia Millia, Oxfam India canceled, will not be able to take foreign donations

The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of more than 12 thousand non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of the country, including Jamia Millia, Oxfam India, expired on Friday, December 31. Now these institutions will not be able to take donations or donations from abroad.

The Home Ministry said on Saturday that most of the more than 6,000 NGOs had not applied for license renewal. According to the ministry, reminders were sent to these institutions to apply for FCRA renewal before December 31, but many NGOs did not do so. In such a situation, foreign funding cannot be allowed to these organizations.

These institutions are included in the list of losing license
There are a total of over 12,000 NGOs including Oxfam India Trust, Jamia Millia Islamia, Indian Medical Association and Leprosy Mission among the institutions that have lost FCRA licences. Apart from these, Tuberculosis Association of India, Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts and India Islamic Cultural Center are also included in this list.

IIT Delhi, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi College of Engineering, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Emmanuel Hospital Association, which runs more than a dozen hospitals across India, Vishwa Dharmayatan , Maharishi Ayurveda Pratishthan, National Federation of Fishermen Cooperatives Limited are also included in this list.

Mamta Banerjee expressed surprise over the sealing of all bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. The institute, however, denied any such action.

Only 16 thousand 829 NGOs have license in the country
There are now only 16,829 NGOs left in the country who have FCRA license, which has been renewed till 31st March, 2022 on 31st December, 2021 (Friday). According to news agency PTI, a total of 22,762 NGOs are registered under FCRA and so far applications of 6500 have been forwarded for renewal.

Controversy arose over Mother Teresa’s institution
Earlier on December 25, the application of the Missionaries of Charity, set up in Kolkata by Mother Teresa, was rejected for not fulfilling the eligibility conditions. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had attacked the central government regarding this. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs had said to reject it citing the rules. At the same time, after the controversy, the Missionaries of Charity Institute had also issued a statement denying any such action by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
