Renowned economist and professor Arvind Panagariya is the new Chancellor of Nalanda University. Arvind Panagariya has also been the former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog. He has also served as a member of the governing body of Nalanda University. He serves as the fourth Chancellor of the university, after computer scientist Vijay P. Bhatkar, former Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo, and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.

Informing about the development via micro-blogging site, Twitter, the official Twitter page of the university wrote, “Vice-Chancellor Professor Sunaina Singh congratulates and welcomes Professor Arvind Panagariya as Chancellor of Nalanda University. Padma Bhushan and former Vice President of NITI Aayog Dr @APanagariya is a renowned economist and professor

@Columbia University.”

Dr Arvind Panagariya is succeeding Dr Vijay P Bhatkar, who served more than one term as Chancellor of Nalanda University. Dr Vijay P Bhatkar was appointed as the Chancellor in 2017 and he is retiring from the post in 2023. The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India informed the university on Friday night about the appointment of Panagariya as Chancellor. Panagariya previously held the position of Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Additionally, he held various positions with the World Bank, IMF and UNCTAD.

Many consider Professor Panagariya to be a leading expert on the Indian economy. He is currently the Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy, Professor of Economics and Director of the Deepak and Neera Raj Center on Indian Economic Policies at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in New York, United States. The Vice-Chancellor of Nalanda University, Professor Sunaina Singh, thanked the President of India and the External Affairs Minister for appointing Professor Panagariya as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. The huge campus of the university started taking shape during the tenure of Professor Singh.

Nalanda University was established in 2007 by an Act of Parliament And it is overseen by the Ministry of External Affairs. The university established the first two Masters courses “Ecology and Environment” and “Historical Studies”. The university currently has six schools, and most of its curriculum focuses on philosophy and culture. It offers classes in Comparative Religions, Sanatana Hindu Studies, and Buddhist Studies.
