The Congress did not officially react to the name change, but the Trinamool Congress and the CPI rejected the move and the Left termed it as an “attempt to rewrite history”.

The BJP on Saturday said renaming the iconic gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan as ‘Amrit Udyan’ is another symbol of colonialism, while opposition parties advised the government to instead focus on creating jobs and controlling inflation. .

The famous Mughal Garden of Rashtrapati Bhavan will now be known as ‘Amrit Udyan’. The resplendent gardens are open to the public once a year and people can visit this time from January 31.

Union ministers and BJP leaders hailed the decision as a step towards a “new India”.

“Welcome and thank Hon’ble President Draupadi Murmu ji for renaming the iconic gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan to ‘Amrit Udyan’. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Twitter, “This new name is not only another symbol of a colonial relic, But also reflects India’s aspirations for the Amrit Kaal.”

In a tweet, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Our Honorable President of India, Draupadi Murmu ji has set an example by renaming the iconic gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan to ‘Amrit Udyan’.” “A powerful symbol of our country’s progress and a reflection of the bright future of New India.”

Union Minister Giriraj Singh welcomed the decision, while Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar thanked the prime minister, saying, “My country is changing.” The government last year renamed Delhi’s famous Rajpath as “Kartavya Path”. The government has said that the renaming of the block and other institutions is in line with the Centre’s effort to remove any trace of colonial mindset.

However, the opposition said that the government should instead focus on job creation and controlling inflation.

Trinamool Congress parliamentary party leader in Rajya Sabha said, “Who knows, they now want to rename Eden Garden and call it Modi Garden! They need to create jobs, control inflation and save valuable resources of LIC and SBI.” care should be taken to protect Derek O’Brien told PTI.

CPI General Secretary D Raja said that this process of renaming has been going on for a long time and no one knows when it will end.

Supporting the move, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said on Twitter, “Another historic decision by the Modi government in the ‘Amrit Kaal’ to come out of the mindset of slavery. The Mughal Gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan will now be named Amrit Udyan.” Shahzad Poonawalla, another BJP spokesperson, said, “When the historic decision to rename the Mughal Gardens as Amrit Udyan is taken to rid India of symbols of ‘slavery’, colonial past – true to its DNA, then some Leaders oppose displaying it. They are prisoners of ‘Mughlai/vote bank mentality’.” President Draupadi Murmu will grace the inauguration of the Rashtrapati Bhavan Garden Festival 2023 on Sunday.

On the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the celebration of 75 years of Independence, the President of India is pleased to give a common name to Rashtrapati Bhavan Gardens as Amrit Udyan, Deputy Press Secretary to the President Navika Gupta said in the statement.
