Relatives joke, tailor’s daughter Nisha Warsi will now make her mark in hockey

Nisha Warsi had modest aspirations in her childhood. She always had a strong desire to participate in sports, but she wanted to do it in a way that would not drain her parents’ bank account. Her family couldn’t afford much, so any opportunity to earn money through sports was always appreciated. She went to hockey.

Cut to 2021, and Nisha has a chance to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She wants to stand on stage, carry arms with her Indian hockey colleagues, and make her country and parents proud. The defender, who celebrated her 26th birthday last month after the Indian hockey team made history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time, is now being celebrated across the country.

A product of Commonwealth Games gold medalist Pritam Rani Siwach’s academy in Sonipat, Haryana, Nisha has faced many personal battles to get to where she is.

Her father was a tailor before a stroke in 2015 left her paralyzed and retired. Before Nisha got a job in the Railways, her mother Mahroon worked in a foam manufacturing factory for a few years.

Her father, Sohrab Ahmed, a tailor by profession, recalled the day she was born and how her relatives mocked the family over the girl’s birth. “Today the same girl has brought laurels to the Warsi family,” he said. You.

Those were difficult times, according to Nisha’s mother Mahroon, who started working as a factory worker so that her daughter could pursue her dreams. “When I used to drop him off for the stadium at 4 in the morning, even in the dead of winter, people would criticize me and say it would take us nowhere. It paid off today.”

At one point Nisha was forced to quit the sport due to social constraints. Her coach, Siwach, persuaded her parents to let her pursue their goals. Fortunately, the interruption was brief.

Nisha’s family celebrated the Olympic victory by distributing sweets in the neighborhood. “We all have worked really hard and focused on preparing for the Olympics. We want all those sacrifices to be worthwhile,” she explained.
