Kohli said on RCB’s Bold Diaries, “It’s so weird I mean, I clearly remember when they finally decided to call it a day. They sent me a voice note saying we came back from Dubai after the World Cup. I got a voice note from AB de Villiers when we were on our way back home. I opened it and while I was listening to it, I saw Anushka in shock. My face fell to which she questioned, I Showed her the message and the voice note from Abby. And she said, ‘Don’t tell me!’. She knew.”

Kohli, however, was not completely clueless about de Villiers’ retirement as he sensed something was brewing only during the last season, when the South African repeatedly invited him for coffee, even though the pair regularly Used to talk.

“I kind of had an impact and I was anticipating it in the last IPL. Our rooms were next to each other, and we would walk and disperse like that, every time we walked into our room and he would look at me outside, he would be like, ‘I’ll take you for coffee. Want to see, one of these days. I was getting nervous and was like ‘I am not sitting with you because I feel something is coming’ to which he always used to say ‘no man nothing, I just want to chat with you, a little It is late and he never speaks like that as we interact all the time,” revealed Kohli.

He said, “So, I knew something was cooking. It’s a very strange feeling. I got very emotional. The voice note was very emotional for me too when he said, ‘Look, I don’t have this anymore.’ I’ve shared so many moments with him, the ups and downs, everything we’re going through was right next to me.”

Thus the dream of Kohli and de Villiers winning the IPL trophy together ended.

An emotional Kohli then said that if RCB win their maiden title, he would be thinking of de Villiers as the hard work he put in all these years to take the franchise to what it is today.

“The other day, it made me think, if we manage to win the title in the coming season, I will get very emotional thinking about that first. Instead of what I would feel after so many years of hard work, I would really think about it. It still means a lot to him, even if he is watching the game from home. He is a special human being because he has touched everyone, and we can all attest to that. He has been amazing, and I don’t think there is one person who can say that AB de Villiers hasn’t contributed to his life in some way or the other.”
