Karim Benzema is set to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for another year after Real Madrid reportedly renewed his contract with an unwritten clause.

Benzema played a key role in helping Madrid win their 14th Champions League title last season. The Frenchman has made his presence felt on the scoresheet in some crucial games against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City. His goal-scoring spree helped Benzema earn the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, which actually proved instrumental in enhancing his stint at Real Madrid.

Real have a clause allowing a player’s contract to be automatically renewed if the French football association rates him as the best footballer in the world, a report in Spanish outlet AS said.

Benzema stood on the verge of ending his current contract with the Spanish giants and was expected to be released in the upcoming summer transfer window. But thanks to his Ballon d’Or win, Benzema could spend another season at Madrid. However, the report further added that the French forward will not have the option of extending his contract and next season will be his final for Real.

Karim Benzema shifted base to Madrid in 2009 after enjoying tremendous form with Lyon. He was linked with the Spanish club along with Cristiano Ronaldo. The forward duo unquestionably brought about a golden era for the club, winning four Champions League titles together. Following Ronaldo’s departure, Benzema emerged as Real’s attacking third man.

The 35-year-old scored two hat-tricks in the knockout stages of the Champions League against PSG and Chelsea, while also scoring the winning goal against Manchester City in the semi-finals.

However, Benzema is yet to perform to his potential this season as a hamstring problem has hampered his performances. He scored the opening goal against Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, which Real won 2–0.
