RD Burman Jayanti: 5 Pancham Da Songs That Will Remind You

What better way to celebrate the birth anniversary of the masters of music than by humping their sleeper hits. The late Rahul Dev Burman aka Pancham Da is no exception. He was the quintessential musician who ruled the hearts of many Indians with his unique and crafty-inspired musical compositions. The great composer Sachin Dev Burman was born on June 27, 1939 in Kolkata (then Calcutta) no less than the great music director Sachin Dev Burman.

Even though the fame of his great father gave him some advantage in the music industry, Pancham Da carved a niche for himself in no time. Under his father’s tutelage, Sangeet Kala wrote his first song Ae Meri Topi Palt Ke Aa – at the age of 9 – which was used by his father in the 1956 film Funtoosh.

Burman – known for introducing the electronic rock genre and jazz music to Bollywood – revolutionized the landscape of the Indian music industry with his unique talent of blending world music with his soulful and melodious repertoire of compositions . He was rich in musical talent, who used to play music even out of the ordinary.

Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein: The popular rain number from Ajnabee, which brought superstar Rajesh Khanna and heartthrob Zeenat Aman together, was directed by Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.

Tera Matana Group: From the film Aradhana, the song’s soundtrack was composed by Sachin Dev and his son Panchamada added jazz and samba notes to enrich it with his distinctive style. The song gained prominence as it made the film’s protagonist Rajesh Khanna an overnight sensation and catapulted singer Kishore Kumar to a new level of prominence.

O Mere Dil Ke Chain: This song from the movie Mere Jeevan Saathi featuring Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja was sung by Kishore Da and music was led by Pancham Da.

Duniya Mein Logon Ko: Sung by Asha Bhosle and RD Burman, it is another hit number from Pancham da’s repertoire. This classic song from the movie Apna Desh features Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, J. Om Prakash, Pandari Bai, Jagdeep, Kanhaiyalal and Madan Puri.

Bachke Rehna Re Baba: The song features the melodious voices of Trimurti: Rahul Dev Burman, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. The song of the film Pukar features Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Randhir Kapoor.
