HIGHLIGHTS

  • On Wednesday, CSK lost to RCB by 13 runs
  • CSK kept languishing at 9th in the table
  • The Super Kings will next face Delhi Capitals

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni said that his team’s batters faltered in the match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Wednesday, May 4 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. After being asked to chase down 174, the Super Kings were in contention to win the game for a long time, but they finished with 160 for the loss of eight wickets.

CSK lost the match by 13 runs and kept tottering at ninth in the points table in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The 40-year-old Dhoni clearly said that the batters needed to take more responsibility and be circumspect while going for their shots. The Jharkhand-born veteran said that CSK could have got closer to victory had the batters been a little more sensible.

EASY TO GET DISTRACTED

“We did well to restrict them to 170 runs. What really let us down was the batsmanship. I feel especially when we are chasing; you know what’s required on the board and what the bowlers are doing. At times you have to curb your instinct and try to see what the situation is demanding rather than just play your shot,” Dhoni said after the match.

“If the batsmanship had been slightly better, maybe in the last few overs we wouldn’t have needed many runs. We got off to a good start. We had wickets in hand and the wicket kept getting better. It’s just that we kept losing wickets at regular intervals. If you take care of those things, chasing is more about calculation and batting first is more about instinct,” he stated.

“As a batter in the middle, you have to decide on those things. We need to keep looking at what went wrong. It’s easy to get distracted by how many points you have. It’s the process that matters more than where you are positioned in the points table. If you take care of those things, then the points table will take care of itself,” Dhoni added.

The Super Kings are next scheduled to face Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, May 8 at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. With four matches left in the league stage, it needs a herculean effort from the Yellow Army to qualify for the playoffs.
