Ravi Shankar Prasad, Javadekar likely to be given top BJP post, role in electoral states

Former Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar may soon be promoted to senior organizational posts in the BJP. The leaders had resigned along with other ministers ahead of the cabinet expansion on 7 July.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to announce new roles for senior former Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar, ANI quoted sources as saying. Sources said these leaders may be appointed as the party’s national general secretary or vice-president.

He will also be entrusted with important responsibility for the upcoming assembly elections to be held in the electoral states. According to sources, BJP President JP Nadda will make an announcement on this matter soon.

Nadda called a meeting of national secretaries at the BJP headquarters in the national capital at 3 pm on Sunday. According to insiders, the agenda of the meeting includes discussions on the strategy for the assembly elections.

On Wednesday, 43 leaders took the oath of office in the first reshuffle and expansion of the Union Cabinet since Prime Minister Narendra Modi was re-elected for a second term in May 2019.

The swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan amid the COVID-19 protocol took place a few days before the monsoon session of Parliament.

Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar were among the 12 Union ministers who resigned from their posts in the Council of Ministers ahead of the Union Cabinet expansion on 7 July.

Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Labor Minister Santosh Gangwar also submitted their resignations. Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda and Minister of State for Education Sanjay Dhotre also resigned from the Union Council of Ministers.

The Election Commission had earlier said that it was confident of holding assembly elections in five states in 2022. The term of the Legislative Assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Punjab and Uttarakhand expires in March 2022, while the term of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is set to expire in May next year.
