Ratna Pathak Shah says her parents were even sceptical about Naseeruddin Shah’s acting career because they thought he was not good-looking enough.

Ratna Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah have been married for 42 years now. In a recent interview, Ratna revealed that her parents were worried and had certain concerns when she decided to marry Naseeruddin. She shared that it wasn’t because of Shah’s religious beliefs but because he had been previously married and was also an actor.

“Baba and Maa thodi der pareshan rahe ki ye kya hone wala hai yaha (My father and mother were worried for a while as they thought what’s going to happen). Not so much because he was a Muslim or older than me but because he was married earlier and he had a daughter. So, this was the problem,” the veteran actress told The Lallantop.

Ratna Pathak Shah further revealed that her parents were even sceptical about Naseeruddin Shah’s acting career because they thought he was not good-looking enough. “He was an actor. Aur aisi shakal ke saath (And that too with such a face)! Back then, Naseer would get to hear this a lot, that how can a guy with a face like that become an actor, including from his family. Even if you are a wonderful actor, survival of an actor is always a tricky proposition. No one can give you a guarantee, it is a tough life,” she added.

However, Ratna Pathak also shared that Naseeruddin’s family accepted her “happily” and did not create any problems. “My parents were worried, how will we survive. My father died very young, but my mother and Naseer were friendly and became close to each other eventually. So it wasn’t a problem at all. Naseer’s family accepted me happily and completely without any question, that was wonderful,” she said.

Ratna and Naseeruddin have spent over four decades with each other. Therefore, in another recent interview, the actress was asked if there is a mantra for a successful marriage. “Just listen to each other, man. Actually, talk to each other. I respect him and his struggles very much more than my own because I got it easy. Naseer comes from a very traditional, particular kind of background,” she told Hauterrfly.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ratna Pathak Shah was most recently seen in Dhak Dhak with Dia Mirza, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanjana Sanghi. The film features four ordinary women who unite for an extraordinary journey filled with emotions, adventures, and discoveries as they set out on a bike trip from Delhi to Khardung La.
