Puri Rath YatraCelebrating the commuting journey of Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra from their aunt’s house, will begin on Monday, July 12. This year the yatra will be in a small radius around Puri. Like any other festival, this festival is also a cultural festival where one can enjoy the traditional cuisine. Here is a list of nine food items that are a must try in Puri:

dalma

Dalma is a mixture of lentils and vegetables and is prepared without oil. It is one of the city specials and was added to the President’s food menu after a special request from former President APJ Abdul Kalam. A restaurant is also named after this traditional dish.

santula

If you are a vegetarian, you must try this perfect mix of vegetables. Santula is a vegetable curry mostly served with rice or Indian roti.

Rasabali

Rasabali made from pressed paneer is deep fried till it turns red. This sweet dish is varied and delicious. The best place to try Rasbali is Jagannath Temple.

Made from rice, pitha is a sweet dish and is served in Puri in the form of various versions. Some of these variants are Mandha Peeth, Enduri Peeth, Arisa Peeth and Chakuli Peeth.

Best served at the sweet shops around Jagannath Temple, Chenna Poda is a sweet dish that is cooked for several hours. It is made from cottage cheese and caramelized sugar.

This mouth-watering dish is served as a morning meal to Lord Jagannath at the Puri temple. It is made from cardamom, coconut, milk and fennel seeds.

Another dish during Rath Yatra is Khaja. Maida is made with sugar, with or without dried fruits or other stuffing, to form a flaky dough, and lightly fried in oil to make khaja. It is one of the most famous sweets of Odisha and is also a prasad at Jagannath Temple, Puri.

Khichde served with curd and papad is also one of the Maha Bhoga dishes of Lord Jagannath. Some of the ingredients include rice, lentils, coconut, sugar and cinnamon.
