Ratan Tata biography coming soon, HarperCollins signs Rs 2 cr publishing deal

Publishing giant HarperCollins has got the global rights to publish an authorized biography of industrialist Ratan Tata. According to a Livemint report based on source inputs, the book is authored by former bureaucrat Thomas Mathew and will feature untold stories of Tata’s childhood, college days and influences early in life.

Tata had approved the publication of his biography by the first batch IAS officer, who had earlier written books such as The Winged Wonders of Rashtrapati Bhavananda Abode Under the Dome. While writing the biography, Mathew made use of Tata’s personal papers, photographs and correspondence in the past. few years. The biography will reportedly also be based on events such as the development of the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano, and the controversial exit of former Tata Sons chairman, Cyrus Mistry in 2016.

The winning bid, which totaled over Rs 2 crore, would give HarperCollins the global rights to the print, eBook and audiobook formats of the biography. However, the OTT rights of the book will remain with the original author.

Matthew will initially receive only an advance from the publisher for the rights of the book. However, as soon as the company recovers the amount from the sale of the books, Mathew will start receiving a percentage of the sales as royalties. The royalty is expected to be between 5 and 15 percent. Official confirmation of the deal is awaited.

This is not the first time that a book based on the people at the helm of the Tata group or its affairs is being published. Earlier in June last year, Penguin Random House India released a collection of inspirational stories from the Tata group called #TataStories. The stories were compiled by the company’s brand custodian Harish Bhat.

Following the #TataStories, the publishing house brought out another book on the Tata family, titled Tata Story: From 1868 to 2021. Written by Irish-American businessman Peter Casey, the book traces the journey of the Tata Group and family over the past century and a half. , The book unveiled many fascinating examples from family life.

Founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata, the Tata Group today comprises 30 companies across ten verticals, with total assets of approximately Rs 18 trillion.
