Rape victim ‘nominated and embarrassed’: Goa government to Bombay HC in Tarun Tejpal case

New Delhi: The Goa government on Wednesday told the Bombay High Court that the victim in the 2013 rape case, in which journalist Tarun Tejpal was acquitted, was named and shamed and that the trial court’s decision was “regressive” and “fifth century”. suitable for”.

Mehta termed the trial court’s decision as “regressive” and “fit for the fifth century”.

The Goa Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice MS Jawalkar later adjourned the matter till November 16.

During the hearing held in virtual mode, Justice Dere said, “Not only in this case, but in all rape cases, we will not allow lawyers to read the evidence, we will read it ourselves”, PTI reported.

The high court will hear Tejpal’s plea on November 16, challenging the upholding of the state government’s appeal against acquittal in the case.

The matter came up before a division bench of the High Court after advocate Amit Desai, representing the former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine, presented the court for consideration of two applications filed by the journalist.

A sessions court had on May 21 this year acquitted Tejpal in a case where he was accused of sexually assaulting his then-accomplice in the lift of a five-star hotel in Goa in November 2013, when they were a were participating in the program.

The Goa government later filed an appeal against it in the High Court.
