Ranji Trophy: Prithvi Shaw, bowlers put Mumbai in the driver’s seat against Uttar Pradesh

Mumbai displayed scintillating bowling to bundle out Uttar Pradesh for 180 and take a crucial first innings lead on the third day of their Ranji Trophy semi-final here on Thursday.

Resuming on an overnight score of 25 for two, the UP batsmen could add just 155 runs as Tushar Deshpande (3/34), off-spinners Tanush Kotian (3/35) and Mohit Awasthi (3/39) took the lead in their Shared nine wickets in the middle. Mumbai Dhawal Kulkarni (1/25) also dodged from the scalp.

Captain Prithvi Shaw scored 64 runs in 71 balls with 12 fours as Mumbai took 133 for one in their second innings to take a total lead of 346 runs.

UP regularly lost wickets after the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions resumed with dominance from the start.

The first UP batsman to be dismissed that day was captain Karan Sharma (27), who became Awasthi’s first victim.

Openers Madhav Kaushik (38) and Rinku Singh (16) tried to advance the innings but only managed to put up a 32-run stand for the fifth wicket before the former was dismissed by Kotian.

After that the batsmen of UP put the line of the pavilion. Rinku, Dhruv Jorel (2) and Saurabh Kumar (0) fell fast. Kotian trapped Rinku in front of the wickets, while Awasthi took two other dismissals.

No. But coming to the bat. 8, Shivam Mavi (48) showed some late resistance, but it was too little and too late.

Mavi hit four fours and two sixes in his scintillating innings of 55 balls.

Deshpande then swung into action and parted the tail.

But that day belonged to Kotian, who broke Mavi’s resistance as UP took a massive first innings lead of 213 runs.

There was more pain for UP as Shaw (64) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35 not out) made an aggressive start in Mumbai’s second innings, adding 66 runs for the opening wicket.

While Shaw played in his usual aggressive style, Jaiswal played the second fiddle.

After Shaw was dismissed, Jaiswal and Armaan Jaffer (32 not out) continued to trouble the UP bowlers as Amol Majumdar’s coach had a leg up in the final.

UP used at least six bowlers in Mumbai’s second essay, but all were challenged.
