Rang De Basanti Ghadiyan 16 Years: Shah Rukh Khan was approached to play the role but…

Rang De Basanti, a critical and commercial hit, completed 16 years of its release today. Surprisingly, we are still talking about the film, and it is still relevant 16 years later. Helmed by director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Sharman Joshi and Kunal Kapoor, there were several factors that made the film special.

The story of five friends, path-breaking performances from Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor and Sidharth and of course the music of AR Rahman made this project one of a kind. The theme of Rang De Basanti will always be topical, as it talks about the struggle of the people with the government. While people are quite updated with the praise it has received, but not everyone is aware of the hurdles faced during the shooting of the film. As the cult film completes 16 years of its release, let’s take a look at some of the popular events that happened during that time:

Omprakash struggled to cast ‘this’ character

The cast of Rang De Basanti was chosen very carefully. Apart from Aamir, Sharman, Atul, Soha, Kunal, the film also starred Madhavan and British actor Alice Patton. Omprakash, in his autobiography, The Stranger in the Mirror, revealed that he faced a major problem in casting Karan Singhania – one of the characters in the film.

Omprakash Wanted Hrithik Roshan:

Hrithik Roshan was Omprakash’s first choice for the role of Karan Singhania. When the actor was offered the role, he did not agree. After this Omprakash requested Aamir to talk to Hrithik. Aamir also went to Hrithik’s house and tried his best to persuade him, but things did not work out.

This role was also offered to Abhishek Bachchan, but the actor refused to play it either. Omprakash did everything possible to get one of Bollywood’s stalwarts in the film, and a month before the shoot – Tamil actor Siddharth was finalized. It is worth noting that Siddharth had not done any Hindi film before Rang De Basanti.

Shah Rukh Khan was the director’s choice for Flight Lieutenant Ajay Rathod

Omprakash also wanted to cast Shahrukh Khan for the film. He wanted the actor to play the role of Flight Lieutenant Ajay Rathod. The director had traveled across America to narrate the story of Rang De Basanti to Shah Rukh while he was shooting for Swadesh. Shah Rukh expressed his inability to do the film as his schedule was tight and was unable to fix the dates for the shoot. The role was played by Madhavan.

Aamir hires Punjabi tutor

Aamir is called Mr. Perfectionist for every reason. Aamir, 40, played the role of a 25-year-old young man and he did it very well. The audience was convinced that Aamir in no way looked like a 40-year-old man. The actor had blended well with the role he played. Aamir not only worked on his fitness and physique but also hired a teacher to learn Punjabi.
