Ranchi Violence: A recent police investigation into Friday’s protests in Ranchi has revealed that a WhatsApp group named ‘Wassepur Gang’ was used to mobilize crowds for violence. So far one person has been arrested in this case and 16 have been taken into custody. Police said the identification process is being probed and necessary action will be taken against the identified accused. Police is also looking for the administrator of the WhatsApp group.

Two people identified as Mohammad Mudassir Alam, also known as Kaifi, and Mohammad Sahil were killed while over two dozen people were injured in protests after Friday prayers in Ranchi. . The protests were over remarks made against Prophet Mohammad by two suspended BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.

Tension prevailed in Ranchi on Sunday too, as police tightened security in sensitive areas and registered 25 FIRs against “thousands” of people following violent protests.

Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Chhavi Ranjan said that internet services were restored in the district after about 33 hours. Around 3,500 security personnel are on guard in sensitive areas of Ranchi, where two people were killed and over two dozen seriously injured in protests and clashes in the city after Friday prayers.
