Ranchi on the boil over the Prophet’s remarks; CM Soren orders probe into Friday’s uproar, SIT formed

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday ordered a high-level inquiry into Friday’s violence in Ranchi over remarks made against Prophet Muhammad by BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. A two-member committee has been constituted to probe the deadly violence that took place in the state capital, in which two people died and at least 24 people were injured.

According to Jharkhand Police, a Special Investigation Team has been constituted and additional security forces have been deployed in other sensitive districts as well.

Officials said the two-member committee comprises senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal and Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Sanjay Latkar. Officials said the committee has been asked to submit its report to the state government in a week.

Ranchi Deputy Inspector General Anish Gupta said that SIT has also been formed. “Till now three FIRs have been registered. The search operation is on to arrest those involved in the violence.”

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in 10 police station areas including Sukhdev Nagar, Lower Bazar, Daily Market and HindPD to control any kind of fire, police said. He said that internet has also been stopped in the district.

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar Jha has been admitted to the hospital with a head injury, officials said. He said that apart from the head, other parts of the body were also injured due to stone pelting.

Former CM Raghubar Das told News18 That despite the advisory of the Ministry of Home Affairs to the states, the government did not make proper arrangements. “The police were helpless at the protest site. There was a crowd of at least 20,000 people. Why was proper arrangement not made? PFI was involved. We demand that the state government form a special SIT team and investigate the matter. These anti-social elements want to disturb the peace of the society.”
