New Delhi: Dipika Chikhlia, who played the role of Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, recently reacted to the controversy that followed after ‘Adipurush’ director Om Raut kissed actor Kriti Sanon on her cheeks in the Tirupati temple complex. Talking to Aaj Tak, Deepika said, “Kriti is the actress of today’s generation and in today’s time kissing and hugging is seen as a sweet gesture. She never considered herself as Sita.” Deepika said that when she was playing the character, she “lived as Sita but today’s actors think of it as a character. They don’t bother after the film is over”.
Deepika recalled that during the 1980s, when Ramayan was on air, no one used to call actors by their names. “When we were in character on the set, people used to come and touch our feet. Those were different times. People didn’t consider us actors, they considered us gods. We couldn’t even hug, kiss There is no question. After the release of Adipurush, actors will get busy with their next projects and forget about their characters but that has never happened with us.”
He said that he was “treated like we are Gods who have come to live in this world. That is why we never did anything that hurt the sentiments of people.”
Meanwhile, BJP state secretary Ramesh Naidu Nagothhu also reacted to the incident and shared screenshots of Kriti and Om Raut’s clip and criticized the action. Sharing a now-deleted tweet, he wrote, “Engaging in public displays of affection, such as kissing and hugging, in front of the Lord Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala is considered disrespectful and unacceptable.”
