Madurai: Family Members and relatives of a 21 year old college students In Ramanathapuram district of Tamil NaduThe man who died on Sunday refused to accept his body on Monday and alleged that he died due to police torture. They staged a sit-in outside the Ramanathapuram Government Hospital, where the body was kept after the postmortem.
According to sources, on Saturday, the Keelathuval police had detained L Manikandan of Neerakoliendal village during vehicle checking.
Manikandan, who was on a two-wheeler, did not stop when the police tried to stop him. The police chased and caught him. They took him to Keelathuval police station for questioning. The student was released from the police station on Saturday evening. His parents and brothers took him home.
Manikandan was unwell later and was found unconscious on Sunday morning. He was taken to Mudukulathur Government Hospital, but was declared brought dead.
The family members of the student alleged that the police thrashed him, leading to his death.
The police have denied the allegation. Ramanathapuram district superintendent of police E Karthik interacted with the family.
Police sources said there was a CCTV footage of the student being safely handed over to his parents at around 8 pm on Saturday and the parents had also given in writing that Manikandan had been released safely.
The hashtag #JusticeForManikandan was trending on Twitter, with many demanding an early inquiry into his death.
The postmortem report is awaited.
