Ram pickup recall; Defective side air bags can damage shrapnel

DETROIT: Stelantis is recalling more than 266,000 pickup trucks primarily in North America because side air bags could burst without warning and throw shrapnel into the cabin.

This is the second major recall of pickup trucks for the same problem in the past two months.

Stelantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, says the recall cover covers some Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty pickups from the 2015 to 2020 model years. Also included are some previous generation Ram 1500 pickups known as classics from 2015 to 2020. The latest version of Ram 1500 is not affected.

Stelantis said in a statement Friday that air bag inflators in pickups were contaminated with moisture during a supplier’s manufacturing process. The metal canister holding the inflator can burst, even if the air bags were not deployed in the accident.

An inflator exploded, but Stelantis says there were no casualties.

The company says it will notify customers when they can schedule the service. Owners with concerns or questions can call (800)-853-1403.

Last month, General Motors recalled more than 400,000 pickups in the US for the same problem.
