However, in Maharashtrian culture it is said that brother should continue to wear Rakhi for 15 days from the day of Raksha Bandhan. Maharashtrians celebrate a festival called Pola on the 15th day. It is said that on this day Marathi farmers worship Lord Marbot Dev and also worship animals like bulls.

According to the Hindu calendar, Raksha Bandhan, called Panchang, is celebrated on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha in the auspicious month of Shravan. This year this day is falling on Sunday 22nd August. As part of the rituals of the day, both brothers and sisters wake up early in the morning to take a bath and put on new clothes.

Sister should keep fast till she ties Rakhi to brother. Rakhi thali is prepared with diyas, rakhis, delicious sweets of brother’s choice, raw rice and kumkum. Then this plate is placed in front of the Lord in the temple. During the auspicious time of the day, both brother and sister pray to God, seek his blessings and then take the plate from there.

The ceremony begins with the girl applying tilak on her brother’s forehead followed by rice. Rakhi is then tied on the wrist and sister feeds sweets to her brother. Once done, the brother gives gifts to his sister and later she breaks her fast.
