INS Mormugao: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will commission a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Sunday. He has reached Mumbai and will soon commission INS Mormugao. According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the event marks the formal induction into the Navy of the second of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers, which have been indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house organisation, the Warship Design Bureau and It is constructed by Mazagon Dock. Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.

The majestic ship is 163 meters long and 17 meters wide with a displacement of 7400 tonnes and can be considered as one of the most powerful warships built in India, the ministry said. In the Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) configuration, the ship is propelled by four powerful gas turbines, capable of achieving speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship has enhanced stealth features resulting in reduced Radar Cross Section (RCS).

Salient Features of INS Mormugao

Mormugao is equipped with state-of-the-art ‘state-of-the-art’ weapons and sensors such as surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles. The ship is fitted with a modern surveillance radar which provides target data to the ship’s artillery weapon systems. The anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the ship are provided by indigenously developed rocket launchers, torpedo launchers and ASW helicopters. The ship is equipped to fight under Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare conditions.

A unique feature of this ship is the high level of indigenization involved in the production of about 75%, which reinforces our national objective of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. Some of the major indigenous equipment/systems onboard Mormugao include surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes and launchers, anti-submarine rocket launchers, besides super rapid gun mounts, Combat Management System, Integrated Platform Management System, Automated power management systems included. , foldable hangar doors, halo traversing system, close-in weapon system and bow mounted sonar.
