Rajkumar Hirani Birthday Special: Here’s a look at the iconic films of the famous filmmaker

New Delhi: Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most acclaimed and successful story writers of Hindi cinema. Despite directing only 5 films till date, the director has set a standard for visionary storytelling for generations to come. The director’s subtle style of narration has earned him a lot of praise from the audience, the industry and critics alike.

Today on his birthday, we take a look at his box office blockbuster movies that rocked the silver screen.

Munnabhai MBBS (2003)

Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut starring Sanjay Dutt in the lead earned him the title of a master story writer. Not only did the film become one of the biggest blockbusters at the box office that year, but the characters of Munna and Circuit were brought home by the audience. The film came as a breath of fresh air, giving the audience a break from the romantic drama.

Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)

The sequel to the hit blockbuster was once again the hit combination of Munna and Circuit, where the characters conveyed a social message in their own way. Like the previous part, this film was also well liked by the audience.

3 Idiots (2009)

The film has carved a niche for itself as one of the most path-breaking films of Bollywood. The characters are etched in the memory of the people. Dealing with realistic situations and issues, the film was presented to the audience in a fun and entertaining manner with a heartfelt social message which was well received by the audience.

PK (2014)

Overwhelmed by the stupendous success of ‘3 Idiots’, the director once again collaborated with Aamir Khan for an entirely different story. The message that the film conveyed was strong yet presented in a way that left the audience mesmerized by the narrative. The satire on misconduct in the name of religion was an eye-opener for the audience. The film also starred Anushka Sharma and late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Sanju (2018)

Hirani collaborated with Ranbir Kapoor for this biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt. The highest-grossing film of that year once again took a toll on Ranbir’s career, which was going downhill after delivering back-to-back flops. The film garnered various awards for the plot that year.

Take a look at some of Hirani’s iconic characters

Munna Bhai: Sanjay Dutt who had created the image of a ‘Bhau’ through his previous films came as a completely different person through the role of Munna. He instantly won hearts with his portrayal of the good being of a bad guy.

Circuit: Arshad Warsi’s character breathes life into the film through his amazing performance. The crazy but unconditional love he had for his friend made the audience yearn for a friend like him.

Virus in ‘3 Idiots’: Boman Irani’s character was that of a tough teacher we all have faced at some point in our lives. The bubbly character of the virus left its mark on the minds of the audience.

Raju Rastogi and Farhan Ansari in ‘3 Idiots’: The characters of Raju and Farhan, who belonged to two different ends of a spectrum, were other wonderful characters brought to life by Rajkummar. The characters were very relatable with all of us remembering one Raju and one Farhan in our group.
