Cricket fans watch India and Pakistan’s World Cup T20 match on the big screen in Kolkata.

A private school teacher in Rajasthan’s Udaipur was sacked and a case was registered against her after she posted a celebratory WhatsApp status after Pakistan’s victory over India in their Cricket World Cup match on Sunday.

Nafisa Attari, a teacher at Neerja Modi School Udaipur, had put up a picture of Pakistani players with the caption, “Jeet gayi… we won.”

After screenshots of his WhatsApp status went viral on social media, the school management sacked him.

“Yes, we have decided to sack the teacher,” said Mahendra Sojatia, the school’s president, after a meeting of the Sojatia Charitable Trust, which runs the school.

SHO of Amba Mata police station Narpat Singh said that a case has also been registered against the teacher under section 153 (abetment with intent to cause riot) of the Indian Penal Code.

The teacher later issued a video statement apologizing for the post and said that she did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

“Someone messaged me and asked if you support Pakistan. As the message had emoji and it was a fun atmosphere, I replied ‘yes’. But, it doesn’t mean anywhere that I belong to Pakistan. I support. I am an Indian and I love India. I love India as much as everyone else does,” Attari said in her video message.

He added, “As soon as I realized that I made a mistake, I deleted the status message. I am sorry if someone’s sentiments have been hurt.”

India suffered a 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday.
