Last month, officials of the department met representatives of the companies concerned, but were not satisfied with the procedure adopted by them. Hence, it was decided to make the SOPs stricter.
“We met representatives of online cab services but the documents and process for recruitment of drivers shared by them was not satisfactory. it started with Uber service, but we will also talk to Ola, as the driver verification process needs to be done in a detailed manner so that their background checks can be done properly. While we have an SOP for this, we are looking at revising it as the safety of passengers is of paramount importance. We will again hold a meeting with representatives of cab services this week, said a transport department official.
According to officials, cab services have an online system where, most of the times, customers do not give a clear reason for the low rating to the driver due to the apprehension of being identified. Even the cab companies take only the registration details of the vehicles and the driver’s license information.
The officials claimed that they started looking into the verification of the drivers after an informal complaint came to them, in which a woman was traveling with a child in a cab when the driver allegedly misbehaved with her.
Driver’s licenses are issued by RTO and necessary action can be taken in cases of malpractice. All cab drivers are required to obtain a certificate from the police stating that the driver in question has no criminal record along with address proof etc.
